Dyeing with tea is an ancient tradition in traditional Chinese culture and handicrafts. It is an easy process and gives your textiles a rich earthy colour. Tea leaves are rich in tannins which bond well with natural fibres. This workshop provides an opportunity to explore a sustainable and eco-friendly way of dyeing fabrics with tea leaves. You will be guided on natural dye techniques step by step and it is friendly for the beginner. The tutor will also teach you how to make beautiful and unique tie dye patterns. Three colours you can get through different mordants.

In this workshop, you are encouraged to bring 2-3 fabrics such as t-shirts, cotton, placemats, etc to finish your own project. Please note that the fabrics you bring need to be natural fabrics because natural dyes derived from plants work best on natural fabrics. There are options to buy dyeing materials (white bamboo scarf £6, white cotton tote bag £4 etc) if you need more.

During the workshop, participants can have an immersive experience about Chinese Kungfu tea ceremony. This allows participants to learn about and appreciate the art and culture of Chinese tea-making.
